Whether you cook directly on a campfire grill grate or use a portable gas grill, almost everything you cook during your camping or backpacking trip just tastes so much better! But to cook, you need to carry the necessary spices with you. And you cannot always rely on the improvisations – Tic-Tac containers or medicine dispensers to keep your spices safe, secure and dry. What you need is a reliable travel spice kit which is durable and compact.
So when our 13-year entrepreneur Naomi contacted us to review the Spice It Up! Travel Spice Kit, we were all game for it. The Spice It Up! Travel Spice Kit is an excellent buy if you are looking for an affordable, multipurpose travel kit for your next outdoor trip or weekend getaway.

Product details and review
The Spice It Up! Travel Spice Kit came neatly packed in the standard courier packing. The package had all the advertised items – a zipper travel pouch, nine round-shaped spice plastic containers and a label sheet with 9 pre-marked labels and 3 un-marked labels.
Each plastic container is made of BPA-free plastic and looks pretty durable. The container is airtight, with a three-round screw cap that keeps the contents safe and dry. And the sturdy build means that you can screw and unscrew the cap for a long time without it giving up on you.
The containers in the spice kit are perfectly-sized for a family camping outing. They did look a litter big for a short 2-3-day one-person backpacking trip. If you are very particular about the weight and size, you may probably want to look at the GSI Outdoors Spice Missile instead.
Though the containers are not advertised as fully water-proof, they still look completely moisture resistant. We even filled one of the containers with a semi-wet paste to see if the content is secure in the container and it worked as expected. Moreover, if you use the travel pouch to carry the spice kit, you would already have an extra layer of protection for your spices.
The containers and pouch are all TSA-compliant, so you can safely carry them in your check-in luggage.
The Label Sheet is not your everyday cheap labels – its decent quality Avery-branded label sheet. The label fits the cap of the container perfectly. And you have three unmarked labels that you can very-well label using a marker.
The Travel Pouch is a decent-quality zippered travel bag. The 9 containers fill comfortably in the pouch with enough space to add a couple of teaspoons. The travel pouch is available in a bunch of assorted colors – sky blue, pink etc. and the one available is shipped to you.
Now let us come to some of the limitations or drawbacks of the spice kit. Firstly, because of the circular shape of the containers, it is not the most compact travel kit. You can probably save some space by using the Tic Tac boxes. Secondly, there are no dispensing holes or opening on any of the containers. So you would have to unscrew the container completely to access the contents. This is not a major issue, but still a hassle especially for salt and pepper.
Despite these small limitations, overall we found the Spice It Up! Travel Spice Kit as a decent buy for its price. Though designed primarily as a spice kit, you can use the small plastic containers for virtually any purpose you need. In fact, we used one of the containers to store vaseline soaked cotton as tinder for the fire.
To summarize, the major positives and negatives of the Spice It Up! Travel Spice Kit that we observed are listed below:
- High-quality, BPA-free, transparent plastic containers with screw-type cap. Decent size for large camping group.
- Airtight construction with moisture-resistant design.
- The set of 9 TSA-compliant containers comes with a travel pouch and 12 good-quality labels.
- Competitively priced and cheaper than other similar products in the market.
- No containers have a dispensing hole or opening, so have to be unscrewed to access the contents.
- Large, circular size makes the travel spice kit take more space than Tic-Tac boxes or other spice kits.
